Clean Energy on the “Fourth Workshop on Enhancing the Regional Distribution of Clean Development Mechanism

Clean Energy on the “Fourth Workshop on Enhancing the Regional Distribution of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects in Asia and the Pacific”, Manila, the Philippines, 4-5 September 2013.

The fourth workshop on enhancing the regional distribution of CDM projects in the Asia and the Pacific was successfully organized by ADB, IGES and UNFCCC Secretariat on 4-5 Sep 2013. The workshop took place at the headquarters of the Asian Development Bank in Manila, the Philippines, and was attended by more than 100 participants from across the Asia-Pacific. The objective was to improve regional distribution of CDM projects in the region, from the view that CDM opportunities remain even at the challenging time of low credit demand and price. At the same time, it is clear that a range of initiatives to incentivize greenhouse gas reduction is emerging, thereby paving the path to low-carbon development.

Bayarmaa Amarjargal, Clean Energy’s Carbon Finance Specialist, made a presentation on the workshop about carbon credit sales opportunities and challenges in Non-EU carbon market from project developers’ perspective based on two case studies. The first project was the 50MW Salkhit wind farm project, the first wind project in the country and the first large scale CDM project registered from Mongolia to the UNFCCC in 2012 before the deadline of 2013, making it possible to access the world’s biggest carbon market – EU Emission Trading Scheme. The second project is the 250MW wind project to be developed at the Southern Gobi by Clean Energy Asia jointly with Softbank as part of Asian Super Grid concept, which will not access EU ETS, being the post-2012 project from developing country. Carbon credit sales opportunities were compared in different carbon markets from Australia, New Zealand and other emerging carbon markets, analyzing the impact of new emerging markets on carbon credit demand and supply.
